New car? Buy parking space first

Central Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 (MVA) is under review by the Sunder committee for few changes in the laws. One of the most important suggestions from the committee is that a buyer should furnish proof of parking space at the RTO for the registration of the vehicle. The proposed law will makes it mandatory for every new car to have an allocated parking space, and help reduce congestion in the cities.

Transport department officials from across India met in Delhi to discuss the report with members from the union ministry. The Maharashtra transport department welcomes this new proposition and believes that it will help reduce overcrowding across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Sikkim has already implemented such a policy, and if centre accepts the changes all states will have to follow the mandatory parking space policy.

If implemented, the new policy will reduce the number of new cars on roads, quite literally. Buyers in metros will find it especially difficult as space is at a premium, and this will directly affect vehicle sales. Buying a second or third car might just become a distant dream in cities.
